2010 Season Totals...
As a newcomer to metal-detecting, I feel like I am off to a terrific start in a hobby that I am sure I will continue for many years. I started late in the year - September to be exact - and have been lucky enough to have some very good finds in a short period of time. Here in Indiana, snow is on the ground and the freeze has set in, so I'm calling it quits for the season.
Here are my totals for 2010:
61 Quarters (1 - '41 silver)
112 Dimes
2- Mercury Dimes (1938)(1942)
1- Barber Dime (1902)
1- Indian Head Penny (1896)
40 - Nickels (5 silver)
450- Pennies
19 - Wheaties
8 - Tokens
My relics include: 3 Silver Rings, a 1936 Buffalo Nickel Encased Fob, a Civil War Eagle Infantry Button, a Civil War era Confederate Spur, an Ancient Order Of United Workmen jacket button, a Regulation U.S. Army brass Whistle and countless other goodies.
I'm already looking forward to 2011.

I spent a couple hours at my parents home this morning. They live in on an early-1900's farmstead. After a while, Dad and I were able to determine the location of the "old trash pile". Lots of zinc mason lids (no jars with money...grrr) bits of metal and tin, remnants of old cans. I hit a 73 VDI at 3 inches and decided to dig. Dad said, "About 10 feet to your west is where I found that arrowhead when I set the post for that fence". I popped the plug and loosened the dirt and wouldn't you know it...
I told Dad, "You're not gonna believe this..."
What are the odds? This nice point that's been reworked within an inch of it's life. That point was the BONUS. Here's what I pulled out of the hole...
I do not yet know what this is. It's all iron - very thin mounting plate - designed to be indoors I assume - Knife holder picture frame hanger? I am currently cleaning this up using electrolysis. I'll post a new pic when completed.

Red Crown Service Station
Red Crown Service Station
Date: 10/22/2010
Location: The site of the Red Crown Service Station. (MMM)
Details: This little corner gas station was in operation from the 20's through the early 1950's.
Due to time constraints, I was unable to search the entire corner lot. In my short time there I found a 1950 Wheatie, a 1955 nickle and various modern coinage as shown in the picture below. While I was diggin the Wheatie signal, I started running into a large amount of debris in this very small hole. Not wanting to risk damaging anything of important, I took my sweet time. I started hitting debris at 5 inches deep and stopped at around 7 inches. This is a site that I will continue to explore, not only for the possibilty of silver coins, but also for the possibility of relics from the site.
L-R: Concrete slab - china cup - metal fragments - nails - broken bottle - window glass shards.

Kenny Penny
1845 Large Cent
10/9/2010 - Here's a story I must share with you! Today one of my detecting buddies and I went to a very remote location in the middle of a township section. A long, long time ago, a homestead stood on this location. Today, it's a non-descript hill in the middle of a very large field. My buddy, Ken and I decided we would dig every hit we got. The chance of relics was too great to pass up. We attacked the hill and after a while, Ken hit a very nice copper button. Minutes later, another copper button!
After a few more minutes, Ken yelled, "You're gonna wanna see this!" I walk over to him - he's smiling ear-to-ear - and he shows me a stunning 1845 Large Cent. I had to snap a quick picture with my cellphone camera. It's a horrible photo, but the coin, while patinaed beyond belief, is nearly perfect! No visable wear, the detail is clear and vibrant, it is truly an amazing find. Wait, there's MORE to this story!
You're not gonna believe this...are you ready for the kicker???
He didn't even have to dig for this beauty! It was a SURFACE FIND!
He got a hit, kicked away some of the bean stubble and this lovely lady was laying on top of the ground, smiling at him! This area has been farmed for YEARS! How many tractors, plows, disks, wagons and combines have run over this amazing coin? Can you imagine the incredible luck?
Congrats Ken! If it couldn't be me...I'm glad it was you!
